Thresholds: A Grief Companion for the In-Between

Grief does not move in a straight line, and it does not only belong to death. We grieve people, relationships, identities, health, homes, futures, and the lives we thought we were going to live. Sometimes grief arrives immediately. Sometimes it waits years before asking to be felt.

Thresholds: A Grief Companion for the In-Between is a deeply personal exploration of grief as a passage rather than something to fix, overcome, or leave behind. Written from my years of sitting beside the dying, facilitating traumatic loss groups, and accompanying people through some of the most tender and disorienting seasons of their lives, this book offers another way of understanding what happens to us when something we love is lost.

Through reflections, stories, rituals and embodied practices, we explore the many shapes grief can take, how it lives in the body and nervous system, the need for witnessing and ritual, our relationship with the natural world, the loss of identity that can accompany grief, and the slow process of learning to trust and participate in life again.

This is not a guide to “moving on.” There are no tidy stages here and no expectation that you turn your loss into something beautiful. It is a companion for the in-between—for the place where the old life no longer exists and you may not yet know who you are becoming.

You do not have to rush through that place.

You are allowed to grieve. You are allowed to change. And you are allowed to find your way back toward aliveness without leaving behind what you have loved.
